Strange sight on plot today
« on: January 16, 2010, 21:57 »
Took the lad down today to help and apart from catching the adult rat in the trap ( 4 caught so far) found a set of intestines.
My 7 year old asked were they from a rat, answer no as much too big. Do not know of any chickens at the allotment dying, but they seemed a bit large for that. We do have a fox though which gets leftover meat and dead chickens occasionly. Did not see any evidence of animal remains, so could it have belonged to a chicken?

Eeeek!
Dont post a picture :tongue2:

How odd!  Return of the body snatchers.  Sounds like something a fox has dropped?  Any butchers bins near you?

Anyway, like Lizzie says, get rid of it before it attracts undesirables.  If you're ground isn't still frozen, suggest you give it a decent funeral.

How rural are you , if there are any shooters or  ferrets being worked nearby it is normal to gut any rabbits caught in the field so the carcass cools faster.
Foxes normally clear this up helped by crows or even rats especially if the weather is cold.

I thought rabbits were gutted straight away as they release toxins from their guts which poisons the meat.
Agree with Lizzie though and I wouldn't feed the fox as they will be back for your live chickens next  :(
Staffies are softer than you think.

You are right about the tainting of the meat especially with game damaged by shot , ferreted ones are less of a problem.

Live in Harlow plot does back onto a field.
The fox use to get into someone's chickens, he has now left. Mine & someone else fox & rat proof the chicken area, 3 others don't. Fox motches around every night, footprints in the snow. The fox will remain as the plot backs onto houses.
Count my neighbours chickens and ducks all there.

A squirrel?
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.
