Plum tree - Crinkly leaves
« on: May 21, 2007, 11:54 »
After having a fairly decent crop from a young plum tree last year (its first full year in the ground) this year it has only set about a dozen fruits.  Additionally many of the young leaves on the new growth are crinkled up and not opened out flat     Is there a problem here please?

Thanks WG.  I did suspect this and checked a couple of the leaves but no sign.  Maybe I need a more thorough look.

Thanks WG - the photographs on that link show exactly what the leaf curl looks like, so a good steer - I will have a more detailed look for them tonight and treat accordingly.  Will a soap solution work or will it need something nastier?

I'm the wrong person to ask about nasties

My reading of it is that the aphids will have moved off by now anyhow.

Agree!
Some years it can be bad... affected my damson tree a couple years ago...depends on weather and frosts can make you loose blossom

Aphids - become winged in May and migrate of one plant to another host species.

Thanks all - I think it all fits - aphids looks like the issue here   , I did have plenty more blossom than fruit that has set and as you say, the problem may have now 'moved on'.  I need to be more aware next year - but hey, that's what this forum is all about  :) .
