Toms for taste
« on: January 13, 2010, 02:59 »
Been growing sungold for a few years which are superb in terms of the crop you get and especially the flavour. Was just wondering what other varieties people have grown which can match or even better this for flavour. Or if you havent grown sungold which are your favs for flavour.

Was reading this 1.

TOMATO GOLDEN CHERRY Ref: 0327
The very 'Tops' in Tomato experience. Japanese bred and most definitely outyields, outflavours, outclasses even ' Sungold', once considered to be the gardener's No. 1 for flavour. Add to that its resistance to cracking - its desire to remain on the vine and its superlative flavour and you will then have some idea of what's in store for you. An absolute outright winner, believe us! Cordon. 70-75 days from transplanting.

Any1 with any experience of this 1.
Woooooooooooooo

look here

for previous topic about the same thing, it may help.
However, everybody's tastes are different, so what one person likes another may find unpleasant. Personally I find the yellow toms a bit on the sweet side.....I'm looking for a tom with a tangy taste :)

I did Sungold last year and they were delicious but they did split a lot. I've got some Golden Cherry to try this year for just that reason...

Tigerella, I grow these as they get that zing at the back of your cheeks going, bit more acidic than most and good to look at.

Yer mine did split a lot 2. Maybe we were doing something wrong. Although I watered mine each day to keep the soil moist but they still split. Any1 any ideas why they split so much.  Where you getting your golden cherry from ?? Has any1 grown these b4?? Any gd taste wise.

I was just asking ppl who like sungold, as they are prob my fav taste wise if they grow any others which are up there with that sweet type os tasting tom.

Whats every1 else growing this year??

I have grown sun cherry premium F1 (red) alongside sungold and would say that they taste very similar. Sun cherry is a few days later in ripening but not prone to splitting, and is worth trying.
I have also tried golden cherry but did not think that it tasted quite as good as Sungold. It did not outclass Sungold as the advertising blurb promises!

That's strange Aidy as I grew them last year and wasn't impressed...........but last year was a bad year for toms with the delayed ripening, so I will grow 1 more plant of it this year and see :)

You have no toms for sarnies etc then. Sungolds are rly a tom to eat by its self.

Going a bit mad with Toms this year.

Didn't realise I've brought quite a few which include:

Yellow Brandywine
Shirley
Black Russian
Some large Amish variety.
Tiny Tim
Golden Sunrise
Tigarella which I fully endorse for the tangy taste
Glacier to get a late crop.
and a few others.
Top tip for camping....don't go.
