Yew trees
« on: December 31, 2009, 12:39 »
Hi,
I want to start keeping some chickens in my garden but the only suitable site is underneath a large Yew tree. I am aware that the bark and leaves can be poisonous to livestock, has any one had any problems with Yews and chickens?
Thanks
T

Goodness, I'd be a bit worried about that, though would they eat the needles?  Not very palatable, so possibly not, and I think the bark would be safe too.
Wild birds eat the berries and poo out the toxic seeds, guess chucks would be the same?  Think you might need advice from a boffin for this one.  But would be very interested to hear the answer.

I now have a lot of faith in my hens taste buds they seem to touch the possible food item with their tongue about four time ultra fast then reject or down the hatch. I think it is the dried needles of yew that can cause problems with large livestock and as flowerpower said the berries are good birdfood.
I think i would be more worried about lack of sunlight if they are not on the warm side of the hedge.
