Growers to Layers Mash.............When?
« on: December 29, 2009, 19:41 »
Hi, our hens are now approx 29/30 weeks old (still no eggs)
Do we keep them on growers feed until they start laying?

Hi Crem, we usually put our girls over to Layers (we use pellets though) at 15-16 weeks old.  Are yours pure breeds?  Some of ours were 33 weeks before they started to lay, especially at this time of year, but they have still been on layers since 15 weeks.

I got my hens at about 18 weeks old and they have been on layers since then.  I'm no expert, but I would guess they need the nutrition in a layers feed to er........lay.  Mind you, this time of year they do slow down. :)
Cheese makes everything better.

;)  I'm by no means an expert but Id get em on the layers.  If you're unsure, do it in stages .. starting with half and half growers for a few days gradually increasing the layers till it's all layers.  Good luck !

Thanks for the advice. They are hybrids not pure breeds.
I'll put them onto layers in the next few days.
They are very happy hens and have plenty of greens.

Went we brought them i'm sure they said to keep them on growers until they started to lay!!

If you have anything further to add please do so.

My silkies and pekins were hatched in September and I bought one bag of growers.... I am now at the end of the bag and they will go onto layers now as I dont want a whole new bag of growers :)

I am sure they will survive :)
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!
