I just wondered does anybody know if you can grow lentils in the uk climate? Has anybody on here tried growing them?

we sowed a few from a sprouting kit earlier this year,grew them outside the greenhouse and got 2 or 3 rather spindly plants - but eventually were rewarded with half a dozen little pods and ate a few tasty little lentils from the pod..

not a stew's worth though...

Yes and my opinion is that you don't get enough from them to make it worth while.

But, if you start them early enough, and start enough of them, and have a good fertilised soil and we have a decent summer; then it might be worth it. I'm sticking to beans though - much more of a end harvest for drying.

Like potatoes, lentils need a lot of space to grow enough plants for a decent crop. I find it easier to simply buy dried lentils from an organic source and use my garden space for basic items like toms, peas, onions, carrots, etc. They take up a lot of room as it is and are harder to find as organic in winter.
