poorly Chook - Any ideas Please
« on: December 18, 2009, 15:14 »
Dear  Chicken Experts

We have a poorly chook and I'm hoping that someone might know what we should do. :(

She sands with her neck shrunck back into her body and her bottom tucked under her.  So she looks like a duck.  She waddles like a duck too and had a large bulbus area between her legs which feels like it is filled with liquid.  She does not have anything in her croup, so I guess she has not eaten much today.  I have seen her drink. No whezzing or smells that I notice when I picked her up at lunch time.

I have a hubby who is keen to despatch her - So I am holding out for an answer or idea please. :(

Last time we had a pooly chook she died within 5 hours of us flagging it.  Completely different symptoms though.

I'll keep my fingers crossed.  I'm trying to up load a picture to help.

I'm sorry to say it sound as if it may be egg peritonitis, which means either a trip to the vet for antibiotics which may or may not work, or a trip to the great henhouse in the sky. :(

Suggest you search on 'egg peritonitis' or the symptons before taking my word as law.

It certainly sounds like ascites (fluid in the abdomen) of some kind either egg peritonitis or perhaps tumours on the internal organs.

As treacleminer said - vet or heaven  :(

Thank you Treacle and Aunt Sally.  We did despatch her to chicken heaven, quietly and quickly early on Saturday morning.

At times like this I always think about the happy life the girls have had with us since they left the Battery Farm.  We have had some of them for almost a year now (don't know where the time has gone though) and my Hubby and I are always making sure they are comfy and cozy.

Thanks again.
Regards
Duckling.

You made the right decision duckling.  After giving them a happy retirement it is not right to allow them to suffer anew  :(

i have one that is looking a bit  miserable quite a lot of the time and her rear end is looking a bit like yours in the pic i am hoping she hasnt got egg peritonitis ,thing is she really dont like being held so just picking her up an keeping hold is a fight enough  . i was thinknig about wiping her bottom end with a warm towel to try and clean her  a bit  but i dont know how i will manage that with one pair of hands  :tongue2: , i'll need to double check her tomorw and feel her underneath .
i dont want to lose another one  :( .
