Neighbour had to cull a chicken for me
« on: December 07, 2009, 13:49 »
One of my hens was very poorly- all fluffed up, very cold and not moving and had her head just inches from the ground.  I put her in the medical box- a big plastic box,   gave her antibiotics and hoped for the best.  She was no better this afternoon so I went and spoke to my neighbour and he came and did the job for me.   One of the hens had been laying a soft shelled egg for ages (I´ve been feeding extra calcium etc) so hopefully she was the one.
I hate having an ill animal :(

i had one of mine culled yesterday by someone who knows what they are doing , i didnt enjoy having it done an i would of perferred her to of been put to sleep by the vet but i dont have £25 for that i know that sounds horrible but when u have a pest control person that u can ask then sometimes that better then forking out money .

So long as it is done quickly and without a fuss or any suffering to the animal then that is ok.
Sorry to read about your girlie as well Looby, hugs xx

Agree with Joy, the end result is the same, as long as the person who does the deed knows what they are doing and does it swiftly, it's ok.
My neighbour also does the deed for me when needed.  :(
Sorry to hear about your girls (and can't believe your vet charges that much for a chook, Looby. Didn't cost that much more when we had dear old Rex pts in April and he must have needed about 100 times as much medication AND it was a Saturday!!!

I am so very sorry.  It's never a pleasant prospect, is it?
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!

So sorry about your hen its never nice.

Even if we could all afford to take our hens to the vets the journey and wait etc would be very stressful for them, better really someone who knows what they are doing. :(

That's why pet insurance is more expensive if you live in London - 'cos the vets charge so much more - but then I expect their overheads are more too  :(
I've noticed the difference moving from south Essex to north Essex.

  Aww sorry to hear about your chook.. but you cared enough to let her go and that's better than hanging about while she suffered.  I'm sure I'm only one of many sending sympathy and a hug on here x

lol mine seem to enjoy a trip out in the car  :tongue2:, my girl was meant to go a few days before and i took her to the yard but the guy was late ,i didnt want to leave her in a box inside a stable incase  he never turned up { but he did in the end } so i took her back home but as i got in the car she had half got out the cardboard box and was looking around as if to say ' wow this place looks cool ' sort of look and that made me feel bad as i knew what was going to happen to her .
