Flat Onions
« on: December 07, 2009, 08:38 »
Hi guys

Im growing onions once again even though i hate them  my partner loves them ::)
The problem i have is every year they grow flat, what i mean is they are oval in shape rather than spherical.
I i push them into the soil so the tips of the sets are just poking through and they all seem to be growing really well but when i come to harvest them they have flat bottoms.
Does anyone else have this problem and if not, what am i doing wrong

Sounds like variety to me, some are more oval than others.

Have a look at online suppliers like T&M or Mr Fothergills, they have a fair selection and also description IE whether flat or round type.

I used wilko's set this year and my onions were very round (and some of them were a pound each :)), I remember there were two varieties of white onions available in wilkos and mine may have been sturion or similar.

I fancy growing red onions do you get the sets from the same place. What about growing from seed. :D

Have put red onions in to (hopefully) overwinter, bought them as sets from wilkos - fingers crossed but they are looking pretty good so far...

I had the same thing with my wilko red onions!

50% of them bolted, the other 50% looked more like shallots!

Still tasted good though :)
I hate signatures but love irony

Like you I bought my onions from Wilko's, red and white (Turbo).  Also like you my white ones were flattish but red ones were normal shape.  No complaints on the taste though and will buy my onions there next year along with 90% of my other seeds.

Keep the faith.

Rictic.

The flattish ones are probably Stuttgarter, for round ones grow Sturon. Rictic, Turbo are flattish because they are a cross between Stuttgarter and Sturon.

Thanks for the replies guys
It must be a variety problem then, i'll give sturon a go this year i think.

There has never been a taste issue according to my partner, but they never seem to keep as long as my dads do :nowink:
Incidently my dad has the plot next to mine, and he has become strangely competetive ::)

We are having a giant pumpkin growing competition next year.
It started off just me and dad and has so far gained another 7 competetors. LOL.

I have got to beat him though, i'll never live it down
