Advice on eggs please - Very Worried !!!
« on: December 03, 2009, 13:56 »
Need some urgent advice please!

My girls have just started to lay and we are now getting one egg per day of each of the two girls. The kids have had the first few, but a friend (a non-chook keeper!) says we shouldn't eat their eggs cuz they "may not be safe"

I brought them off a very good supplier (listed on this site infact) and both girls are happy & healthy to my mind.

The whole idea of getting them was to have pets with egg bonus! Is there any truth in what he is saying ??? Or is there something I should be doing before we actually eat the eggs.

I don't know if the birds have had any injections (but like I said they came off a very trusted supplier). Would getting the injections make it safe to eat the eggs and if so how much do they usually cost please?

Sorry for the 101 questions - just very worried now :(
Toni

I'm afraid you non chook keeping friend is talking a load of twaddle to put it plainly. The vaccinations (which most of us have unvaccinated hens) are to help stop the hens getting illnesses (and even then it that isn't a certainty) not to make the eggs safer. Eat your eggs they will be the freshest tastiest eggs you have ever had and let this friend go to the supermarket and get their eggs that will be at least two weeks old and more than likely four weeks old. I know which ones I would prefer
Staffies are softer than you think.

I'll just echo Joyfull 150%   :D :D  What a load of twaddle!  What does your non chook keeping friend think they do to shop eggs before they are sold?  (not a lot apart from keep them in storage for ages before selling them!  ???

You and the kids just enjoy your lovely eggs, and let him know what he is missing.  He may be talking about things like salmonella etc.  To my mind, the big commercial poultry farms have more likelihood of something like that, than your little darlings living in your garden.

Isnt it amazing how everyone is an expert?.....ive been told things off endless amounts of people, they know it to be true cos they used to feed their great aunty's neighbours sisters chickens once when they were 5!
He is talking through his botty!
Not only are the eggs a bonus from keeping fantastic pets, but they are soo healthy and good for you!....where else can you get a beautiful poached egg on toast that goes from bottom(sorry) to plate in less than 10mins
Strike him off your egg list, that'll teach him ;)

Echo everything that has been said 100%
They are healthier than supermarket eggs. You KNOW what you've been feeding your chickens!!
Dont let your friend spoil your enjoyment of your chickens and eggs.

It sounds like the green eyed monster has shown himself.  Jealous of the fact that you have fresh eggs and he hasn't.

Your 'friend' is talking through his vent!!!

I also agree with your comments about the folks on here... they're Grreeaatttt.

Can't wait for Hillfooter to post a reply to this thread.  He is our technical scientific boffin type!!

Enjoy your eggs - and don't share with this friend!

If you only have a few hens he might be doing you a favour. Let him tell all your friends and neighbours the eggs aren't safe... That way they won't expect you to give them any free. All the more for you to enjoy.   :)

Oh that's a bunch of tosh!  Just enjoy those eggs!  If anything, their BETTER than the store bought eggs.
When I die I will slide in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand and chocolate in the other, screaming, "Whooo hooo!  What a ride!" as life is to be enjoyed to the fullest!
