What can I be putting in now?
« on: November 28, 2009, 12:03 »
Got my first bed dug over at the allotment and got some onions and Garlic in.

Any suggestions for what else I could be planting/sowing right now?  The options are rather limited hence the question

Nothing, as far as I know once the garlic and winter onions are in.

Everyone is just getting the soil ready for spring, as and when the conditions allow.
So keep up the good work and you'll be flying by the time the warmer weather comes :)

I know, I've a hell of a lot of work to do, just keen to have a few bits growing over winter, there must be something that can go in  :D

I don't think anything will germinate at near to zero soil temps, even the garlic and onions are bulbs so don't need to germinate.
Rhubarb? fruit bushes and trees? unless you have a greenhouse or cold frame when you just might grow some of the winter lettuce............. really cant think of anything else

One of the older men on my site, gave me some strawbs that i have planted. Don't know what kind they are but they have bits sprouting out of the side.

I have also thought about winter lettuces in the greenhouse

Good luck

Its quite mild up here in Wrexham
I planted some echalote grise shallots in Autumn that seem quite slow in growing, you could try those (if you can get any)
Broad beans (claudia aquadulce)can be overwintered if the weather isnt too cold as well- i know its late but it is very mild for the time of year.
