Putting Rhubarb to bed
« on: October 17, 2009, 21:23 »
I've just pulled all the old leaves and the last of the leaves and stalks that have been got by the frost, from the rhubarb. Do I need to cover the crowns to protect them over winter?
Thanks

I've just covered mine with a good layer of straw today  :)

I have some lovely stalks on mine, do I pull them or leave them over winter? Use them or throw?

Mine are still looking full of life but I think I may pull the leaves and stalks sometime soon - easier than waiting until the forst later on and then having a slippery mess to fuss around with.

I leave mine with just a spade or two extra of soil over the top. Flipping near indestructable things... even when you want to dig them out!

I seem to remember my dad telling me to let the frost get at the crown - improves the flavour but perhaps he was trying to get rid of his at the time!  ::)

Mine thrives on active neglect  ::)

I neglect it completely and it gets active next year  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
