White Rot
« on: November 15, 2009, 13:49 »
Hi every one I am new to the site would  welcome  any tips on how to erradicate the
dreaded white rot in my onions. I have tried Ammilitox and Jeyes Fluid is there anything
else on the market. I have read that garlic powder does help but do not know how to
use it or where to buy it.-----  Big Raddish

There are many entries on this site if you search.

Sorry to say that once you have it where it affects the crop badly the best advice is not to grow any onions/shallots/garlic for 10 years.

The other advice is good plot hygiene.
Keep onion related crops 6 years apart in the rotation.

When harvesting clear all bulbs/tops from the plot, especially any diseased ones.

Do not put infected onions etc in the compost heap.

Wash off your tools/boots between parts of your plot to prevent soil/disease being carried over. Jeyes fluid can be used for this but is not supposed to be used for soil sterilisation.

Do not accept shallots/garlic from other plotholders where white rot is present. Most commercially bought sets for planting should hopefully be free. Seed grown onions are a safer bet.

It is illegal to use Ammilitox and Jeyes Fluid on soil in the UK.

It won't get rid of it; but a work around is to grow in raised beds in sand.

A pal of mine is waiting for the rot to go, and in the meantime he has made what looks like a huge seed tray on top of a table base !!  Works fine for him.

The " box " bit on the top is I guess about 8 inches deep filled with "clean" soil and I supose its 6ft x 4ft .

A raised bed in the sky

Thanks for all your comments I have taken them on board, the only thing to do is to buy the onions from Netto-Big Raddish
