How much did you harvest?
« on: November 11, 2009, 11:09 »
Hi folks,

We are growing for a homeless charity on our allotment and trying to work out how much space we'd need to meet their veggie requirements for a year.

Has anyone see a chart or tool (or web site/book) which shows the average yields of different veggies. So for example, given an average year (sun, rain, propagation rate), what weight of runner beans could you expect to harvest for every square meter bed?

Thanks!
Curly

A 10 pole allotment (approx 300 square yards) was the original size for an allotment designed to keep a family self sufficient in vegetables i.e. 2 adults and a few children.

the vegetable expert book gives expected yields per 10ft row (at least it does in my very old copy
)

just googled it it is now called "Vegetable and Herb Expert by D.G. Hessayon"

Copied from an old Ann Swithenbank book: Approx yield per 12ft row :-

runner beans     50lb
green beans         6lb
calabrese           14lb
cabbage              10 heads
Leek                     9lb
onion sets            20lb
shallots                14lb
peas                      8lb
Tomato                32lb

I only copied the crops I grew at the time, and book is no more :(  Try in your local Library for info :)

emmm doesn't it also depend on soil fertility and type, fertilizer and in the case of things like tomatos the type of covering\protection.
a guy on my site had a huge yield of potatoes. his soul was loam mine was "brick" clay.
so for potatoes at least soil type will determine yield

Soul food?   :D  Now you're cookin'!

It also depends what you want to grow and how boring you can get away with being.  For example - swede and turnip - you can get a lot in - but how much will you actually eat?   Think in terms of what you use and is most expensive.  Around here £5 buys a half hundred weight of maincrop spuds or 10 big savoys, but might do you a couple of kg of courgettes ....  and they grow and grow and grow.  Ditto runners.  But frozen peas are very cheap and the yield is comparatively low.

Also can you freeze your surplus?  We all (well almost all) get sick of the sight of runners by the end of the season.   ::)
