Help! we've bought Mandarins
« on: October 18, 2009, 13:26 »
We couldn't resist them, and were going to wait until we'd moved house but the female had cut her beak on the wire cage she was in and we took pity :(
I;ve put Jack and Vera in a small run with a large bowl of water plus drinking water and some wheat, i dont even know what they are meant to eat. Does anyone have any advice for me please. I know its a bit irresponsible buying them when i dont how to look after them but i felt so sorry for them-they're so nervous. I'll post a pic tomorrow :)
We have 17 chickens, 3 quail, 2 dogs, 3 cats and that's enough (for this week)

Hi KK

They should be fine with corn for now :)

If you can get them duck breeder feed then do :)

Linky here to some info, my knowledge is limited although I know they like to nest in hollows in trees ::)

Thanks Vember, i googled but didn't come up with much ::) Will go and get some proper food in the morning, no where is open today, i'll give them some corn until then. Look at poor Veras bill :( we cleaned it best we could, there are 3 small cuts on it so i'm hoping it will clear on its own now. Looks like OH will be building a nice new run for when we move, i've just broken the news :D

I had a pair of call ducks and they were such characters. I gave them to a friend who has a larger area for them and she has already 14.
They are so much messier than the chickens they used to live with.
Good luck with the mandarins they ae gorgeous.
Now retired from the day job and working hard on my smallholding.

They are terribly posh looking!

Haven't you read the advice about buying poultry because you feel sorry for it! Can't imagine people here doing something like that. Especially not me. (or Sarah)

Never.

They are beautiful.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

  Thanks, we couldn't have proper ducks here, the gardens over the road so water would have been a problem, we cant have them at the new house as the garden is smaller and i dont think it would cope with chooks and ducks, so these were the next best thing. I can see how Vera hurt herself though, i've never known anything as nervous as these :( Really hope i can get them tame. They only have about a square metre at the minute with the house above, but will make a large run for when we move, in a few weeks time. Any tips on getting them tame? Going to order myself a book on care tomorrow :)
