« on: October 08, 2009, 20:28 »
Hi my purple sprouting broccoli has flowered loads of yellow flowers still no sign of broccoli thou? Has it bolted or is it meant to do this and if not can I fix it? Thanks this is my 2nd round with broccoli last year the slugs, caterpillars etc killed it but this year no slugs or caterpillars yet but think i've still killed it, try again next year any tips?

I wonder if you could salvage them by pruning off the flower stalks and see if that stimulates some side shoots?  Worth a try ::)
The less time you have, the more becomes available.

If you've got flowers the buds have opened and the spears are therefore not 'broccolis'

As Hilary says, cutting these off might get you another crop of side shoots, which you'd need to cut before they open  :D

I planted psb out in May and was expecting to harvest early next year. The plants are HUUUGE and I notice purple buds on one. I'm going to give them a week to get a bit bigger then cut them off before they open (and munch them up!) Hopefully cutting will stimulate more buds? Why are they so early?

I sowed mine too early this year (April) and they started flowering in July/August  :(  Some of the plants were an early variety so they will definitely be started a lot later next year

Mine were poor and flowerered more or less straight away before producing good heads.  Some of the other allotment holders said it was poor weather.  I've left them in as pollinating insects seem to love them.

I sowed my purple sprouting in April last year as per the instructions on the packet. It flowered in August, much to my disappointment. I had never had it fail before.
This year I sowed it in July and the plants are a little small but look as if they will produce in spring, as they are supposed to.
I think it is due to global warming and the seed packet makers have not adjusted the instructions on the packets.
