Leeks roting in soil
« on: September 19, 2009, 15:26 »
My leeks seem to be roting at the root base. Anyone knows the cause of this?
Also a couple of them are bolting, would they still be edible or is that going to alter the taste?

pick one and try it. It should be fine - if so, pick the other bolting ones, blanch them and freeze: with leeks, there is not much deterioration in taste when freezing.

Sounds to me as if your leeks are rather too wet - if that is possible...

I haven't the foggiest what you could do apart from keep them well weeded and gently fork around them if the soil is compact.

Good advice about "going to seed" ones - pick them / eat em or freeze them. If you leave them you will get a tough core developing in the middle reducing the edible part of the stem.

Just found two of my leeks with the roots rotted off - the old boy next to me says it's a common problem on the plot and affects about a third of the crop of onions, garlic and leeks (even spring onoins, but as I hoed up about a third of mine, I'm kinda hoping they were the endangered third). All the others seem fine, but I'll have to keep a close eye on them.

It could also be onion white rot which can affect all alliums.

I have the same problem on my plot. Lost all my garlic and
now my leeks, though my onions were ok this year.

Well, that's worst case scenario anyway. It might really just
be the weather.

Do you have heavy clay soil? Rotting more likely for leeks in this soil type due to reduced drainage (if not diseased). Increase drainage next year.
