Would like to see a pic of your homemade version ,I take it the pot is hung from the rim and the plant is growing out of the bottom of it ?If I can get this right I'll give it a go, is it only suitable for bush types or can any variety be used ?

I'm growing some tumbling toms that Munty gave me, and the biggest 4 are in the big hayrack hanging on the wall near the kitchen door.  I've also planted some marigolds in there as companions.

I've planted marigolds near my toms too but I'm finding that they are attracting slugs :?  Still my tom plants aren't affected yet.

I'm doing the upsidedown thing too! I'm using old 5 litre screenwash cans, the plastic ones. I'll cut a hole in the bottom and cut the pourer section off the top. I can then use the handle to hang it up with.

Not planted yet though as still soaking and rinsing to get rid of possible residue from cartons.
first there is a mountain then there is no mountain then there is

Have you tried putting them in the dishwasher? That should clear any residue left...

I've planted some tumbling tomatoes but used 5 litre buckets instead of plant pots, just because they already have a handle to hang them up. But I have found the plants turning up to the light, its early days so will keep you posted as they grow.

The ad claims that upside down they grow bigger roots, the plant doesn't fight gravity and gets more exposure to light and sun which brings cropping forward a fortnight. All of which gives you bigger healthier plants and higher yields. Will work for tomatoes peppers and chillis apparently.

It will be interesting to see how the tomatoes grow. Is anyone trying peppers or chillis this way? I'm thinking of having a go, and compare the crop from this method and a standard one in a pot.

not organic, but cutting down on the chemicals

Ive got a picture of my version on my blog have a look.  At the beginning of this thread Aunt Sally shows the shop bought version.  Apparently you got a bigger root system as it is not fighting against gravity, therefore producing a bigger crop.  Will have to see it it works!!

Hope this puts you out of your misery JS :D

Yep mine too!, I expect they'll stretch out with the increased weight.

Thanks for that. I did try after you suggested but they still smell of the stuff. I'm not going to use them. Might be able to find an old bucket somewhere.

Has anyone else had a go of growing upside down toms.  I have about eight planted up now from cherrys to full size toms, just to see if they work, at present they are all doing well, just wondered if anyone else had a mad inclination to do the same thing.
