Should I put shading on the entire greenhouse?
« on: May 04, 2007, 17:00 »
I'll be growing tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, cucumbers and melons in the greenhouse. Do any of these do better in direct sunlight or should I shade the entire greenhouse? Greenhouse runs west to east so I'm inclined to just shade the south part of it (roof and walls), at least for the time being.
What do you think?

I have just shaded the south of my greenhouse, like yours, it faces east-west. So just try it and see if it is enough.

I kept thinking about painting the outside with diluted emulsion, I've read that is quite good, but I chickened out of trying it!!!  But it would be cheaper than shading paint!!!!

Martin.I paint just the  south facing gable and west side and first row of roof panes with Coolglass. It should be on for two months each side of midsummer in a normal year.Applied mine last month !
Advantages are it goes transperent when wet for max light and can be wiped off with a duster unlike the emullsion applied with a yard brush which was on the g/house at the allotment.Took me hours with Stanley blade wirewool ect to get back to glass.Would also use max ventilation during the day ie door and vents open.Nothing worse than a hot stale atmosphere for plant problems   Bob

I have a clematis montana that grows up a pergola then invades the greenhouse every year so I do little in the way of shading, but would only do the south facing if I had to.

I use an old net curtain suspended from the ceiling of the greenhouse using some bamboo canes across the struts of the ceiling then pin it in place down one side of the roof. It is very good because it defuses the light but does not make the greenhouse darker.
