why is my maran changing colour?
« on: September 19, 2009, 10:44 »
I have one remaining black maran, who is turning brown  I'm not sure how old she is as we bought her at auction but we've had her about 18months to 2 years, could this be because of an impending moult? She also seems to be "resting" a lot, she's not hiding or anything and she feeds readily but she keeps laying down more frequently than usual, she has been wormed and the girls all had antibiotics about a month ago because of a cold, should I be worried or just welcome my new brown girl?

she may be having a very gradual moult, where new fresher feathers are coming through darker making the old feathers look a bit "wishy washy" :)

I know with breeding black Netherland Dwarfs (rabbits) in the past I had to house them out of direct sunlight and put the run in parial shade as the sunshine bleaches the fur and turns it brown! could this have happened to your Maran if she is sunbathing alot? I am sure when she moults her lovely black feathers will grow back!

Thank you for your replies, I hope she'll get her good looks back. I took another look at her yesterday and I'm wondering if the laying down is because she's getting old? As I say I have no idea how old she is but I don't think we've had eggs from her for a while, and her legs are a lot more scaly than my other girls isn't this a sign of age?
