Growing Cubed Pumpkins...
« on: September 10, 2009, 20:19 »
... or any other shaped veg really!

I was out at Disney Epcot in Florida a few years back.  They were growing hydroponic pumpkins (in the shape of Mickey Mouse) in plastic containers.  This seemed to constrain the shape, thus manipulating it.

I've stumbled across this webpage (http://www.instructables.com/id/Grow-a-square-watermelon/) and it seems straight forward enough.

Does anyone have experience of doing this and have any advice to pass on?

Many thanks in advance!

I have never done it but would be interested to know how it works out for you!

I suspect the curcubits are easier to shape than other veg but not sure why...

Grew cubed toms as a kid - easy, quick and fun to do.

Better to grow an apple or a pear inside a bottle then fill it up with calvados or pear brandy to preserve it though.

I've grown heart-shaped cucumbers with ridiculously expensive moulds [not as expensive as they now seem to be, I'm pleased to say!!] I bought from Japan. The moulds are a bit on the small side ... so was a bit of a one-minute-wonder :(

Thanks loads for your feedback.

I love the idea with apples and pears.

I'm gonna get plastic moulds from t'internet and experiment.

Thanks again.  Any advice appreciated...  Even the one about straight carrots!

My mum accidentally ended up with a plant-pot shaped butternut squash,, when she put them in plant pots to keep them off the damp soil
