just gotta keep my fingers crossed

Some days I think that if I had a brain i'd be dangerous.......

Before I took up the spade and got a lottie I booked a long holiday overseas. Now that I have a lottie and have little green things coming up (okay, mostly weeds as we seem to be plauged with thistles and marestail) we have had zilch rain and I fear my little crops will be desicated by time I get back.

If I get back and it resembles the Sahara out there I suppose I'll have to re-sow (and weed into the next year probably), but what out of the following list will I have missed the boat on, so to speak?

brunswick onions, sweetcorn, squashes and pumpkins, runner peans, peas, carrots, parsnips, beetroot, spuds (maincrop) spinach beet

Am I doomed to another summer of Tesco's veggies or is there hope for me yet?
"Is it supposed to look like that?"

Nothing realy if you get the seed in soon all these will catch up. I never rush getting stuff in. Last year this time I had not even built the green house let alone put in squash seed ect but I got a crop. After all the summers seem to last a bit now.
always have a target
and an objective.

When do you go & when do you come back?

Water really well and then mulch might help if it's only a couple of weeks.

Hi,

I go on friday for 3 weeks. I've mulched like mad and am doing rain dances of an evening.  I'll give them a big drink on thursday evening and keep my fingers crossed. I might be alright as they are forcasting rain on Monday here so providing we get a bit each week there might be something to come back to... if not, well, I can plant again and hopefully learn from my previous mistakes.

Cheers!

Just a suggestion ... why not sow some extra seeds before you leave just in case there are gaps to be filled when you come back (it'll still only be late May).   Choose your varieties & maybe have a neighbour give them a bit of water every so often??

Lots of places have been selling cheap seeds this year so it isn't a major outlay if you don't need the seedlings - certainly less of an outlay than buying tasteless supermarket veg!

yes, i've told my husband that his asking me to go on holiday in the height of the growing season is a bit like me asking him to go on holiday during the World Cup!
Still, I'll have to cross my fingers when we go away a bit later in the summer.
best of luck, I'm sure you'll have something to come back to! I was pleasantly surprised when we went away last year and I came back to some really thriving plants. but i think we had a bit of rain while we were gone....

trying to be organic, but it's very frustrating

Forget about everything, have a really fantastic holiday, there will still be plants to sow, plug plants to buy things that will survive and grow.If you get the growing bug it could be the last long holiday you take in summer.

Well, I was right about the weeds..... thistles and marestail everywhere!

Most of the stuff has survived (I gather there was qyite a lot of wet weather while I was away) but the runner beans have gone yellow and the pumpkins look, well, ill.

I've got a busy weekend with a hand fork and hoe I think...
