What has been your biggest success this year
« on: September 02, 2009, 19:40 »
This is the first year I've been growing veg and can say I'm really happy with what has grown, some things better than others, lots of veg frozen for later use as well as lots been eaten nice and fresh. The toms have gone mad so I picked a whole load and made some fresh tomato juice, very very nice with worcester sauce and black pepper, blackberry and apple jam, 2 different kinds of plum jam, lots of green tomato chutney and still got quite a lot growing, all in all very happy.

at my lottie it is probably my sweetcorn.  even though some could do with a little more ripening, ive had 16 cobs so far (beautiful) and think i have another 20+ if i catch them in time.

toms have been good at home but spend half my life wondering about blight

courgettes (marrows) have been plentiful (at home).

onions/ garlic were very average at the lottie, but didnt get the plot till late so may have had something to do with it.

Beetroot.

Not only have I had a bumper crop, but also got the missus to try them. She was convinced she didn't like them (shop bought rubbish), but is now well and truly addicted.  :D

Four things that I have never done before:

1. Growing onions from seed even if though there were small (but strong I may say).
2. Growing some red cabbage from seed even if not the biggest ones.
3. I failed to grow leeks from seed but the ones from the nursery are good.
4. Growing decent heads of calabrese.

I think I'm best pleased with number 1 - so let's put that down as the biggest success.

I can honestly say that I've had a fantastic year. Everything has grown well with good results (with the exception of outdoor toms lost to blight  ::)) that aside, I'm really struggling to single one thing out ........
(Scratches head)
Onions Hundreds
Taters thousands
Runner Beans... Millions
Courgettes.... zillions......

Actually come to think of it, I've had a good crop of Carrotts this year, with (so far - touching wood) NO fly damage. So that's my biggest success

Like  others have said  most of my stuff ha s grown well.

I was worried about my 'Hunter' butternut squashes growing too big etc. but all three plants have been grown in a bucket and have only spread 3ft in each direction but have 4 to 5 well sized squashes on each.

So really they have the surprise success for me.

Plus I love eating them and they arn't cheap from the shops so they are a winner all round.
