I have to disagree Foxy - I would put the boxes on the floor of the car, in the passenger footwell or, as we did, behind the front seats.  Much safer and less chance of them moving around if you have to brake suddenly.  We actually put them on blankets on the floor, to try to reduce the road noise as well.  We did think about putting them on the seats, but couldn't get the seat belt to stay round the box without slipping off.  Good grief, the things we do for our chooks!

We did frighten the Battery Hen Welfare Trust people though.  We have a roof box on our car - sad, but true (because I went on holiday with my mother-in-law and she takes everything AND the kitchen sink with her) and, when we went to collect our ex-batts, they said not to put the boxes in the boot and we looked at them in horror and said "Oh no, we thought we'd pop them in the roof box".  I wish you could have all seen the look on their faces!

actually my point was not putting the chooks in the boot of a car.

yes, Foxy, I think Amanada was saying that the footwell is better than the seat.

Feeb, (back to topic...) ignore the children with their norty step stuff, I promise you that they all give great advice on keeping/looking after chickens.
We all love chickens, and if you listen to our advice, you can't go far wrong.
:)
it sounds to me like you've taken the important info on board, anyway.

wrt to the fox and the busy road: when I lived in a town, a fox regularly visited our garden (surrounded on 3 sides by other houses and a dairy with lorries going in and out all day) and on the 4th by a busy road.

I've also watched a fox cross all the way across a dual carriageway in quite busy traffic safely to the other side.

last thing about foxes: i'd never seen or heard of a fox within a mile of my house when I decided to get chickens (i'd lived there 5 years) within 3 months, Monica had been mauled by one.
you really never can be too careful.
there is a thread on here at the top of the page which is all about keeping foxes out.  Even if you never get a fox, it's always better to spend that extra 20quid fox-proofing than test quite how emotionally attached you are to a chicken (i watched my OH fight tears back when Monica died... :( )

best of luck, anyway, I think you'll be fine!
 :D

We brought ours home in the boot of our estate car yesterday - they were fine *shrug* We left the cover off, made sure the boxes couldn't move round and my daughter kept an eye on them from the back seat. They quickly settled down and went to sleep!

I wouldn't shut them in the boot of a saloon car, so it depends what car you're using.

Feeb - please don't underestimate your local foxes ... they are there, even if you don't see them, and urban foxes travel by day often without being noticed. Once they get a smell of chicken, they can be very determined. Having said which, I know we're not fox proof yet, but we're working on it!
two daughters, nine hens, two goldfish, three cats ...

Personally, I let the chickens drive  :)

They do struggle with the concept of roundabouts though

I live right in the centre of a very busy housing estate about 100 yards away from a supermarket.

I took this picture at about mid day two weeks ago.

Luckily the chooks were still shut in their run - phew  ::)

That is shocking.

I have taken to letting my girls out on an evening and if I have to go in I will leave a radio on. I do not leave the radio on permanently and it is not a substitute for a human, but it gives me a bit of comfort when I am running for the loo or off for that cuppa.

If you put the chooks in the back of the car, make sure they don't make rude gestures at other motorists. They can and will do it.  ::)

What station do they prefer, or should that be what station do foxes hate
