how long should a moult last?
« on: August 23, 2009, 11:42 »
One of mine has been in moult and off lay for about three weeks now. She is a hybrid layer (Bovan Goldline) and is two and a half years old. She is usually good for an egg a day and hasn't missed more than one or two days off lay before. She is still happy and feisty. Still eating and shows no signs of being unwell or unhappy.
Normal?
How long should a moult last and is there anything I should be giving her as extras?
They get layers pellets, fresh greens every morning and corn late afternoon. Battle's Poultry drink in the water and they have grit/oyster shell.

I am probably worrying over nothing aren't I!

Hiya! I too have a hybrid, Sussex White Star, who is moulting and she hasn't laid the last three weeks and the garden and coup are covered in white feathers! I thought something had attacked her the first day I saw them! Mine, Snowy, is about 18 months old, and usually 1 egg per day even in winter!

Hopefully it won't alst too much longer, or she'l have no feathers left!!

Good luck!!

Hiya know the feeling the ducks are doing it too .   If I knew how to make pillows I could be in business...and cruelty free too :nowink:

I give my chickens a bit of cat food.  I read somewhere it helps with the moult.  I think chicken egg suppliers starve their girls for 24 I think to help them moult quicker
Their feathers will come soon, mine have bum fluff where their petticoats were

I have a little dutch hen that is nearly naked
Looks a bit like an oven ready quail :nowink:

There are three signs of old age. The first is your loss of memory, the other two I forget.
