Three Months In
« on: August 21, 2009, 10:41 »
Hello All

Three months in and the allotment is basically clear but more importantly "stuff" is growing and I've even had carrotts, beetroot and runner beans from it (plants for the latter courtesy of one of my new neighbours - fine chap)...

What I wasn't prepared for was how quick weeds can grow  You can almost hear them shout "I'll be back!" as you remove them from the ground.

The next job is to start a compost heap.... which leads to my question.... Can you compost the weeds, some people seem to do it others shun the idea... any thoughts?

Cheers

As long as they are annuals with no seed heads you should be fine. Perennials, such as bindweed and mares tail should be burnt, as should those with thick tap roots.
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

My allotment is 4 miles away and for me to bring perennial weeds home to burn isn't practical. So they all go in the compost. I use all my compost in potato trenches and as I fork it, any live roots are easily seen and can be removed. I leave them on a hard surface to dry out and they go back into the compost heap.
