Wood pigeons
« on: August 07, 2009, 13:37 »
I honestly think these are my worst pest. They eat everything except weeds, including my pak choi. And they stride up and down my paths as if they own the place, merrily nibbling at all me greens. I think they're too fat to fly.
I have bought some more netting, grrr
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Wish they's understand that they're woodpigeons and don't belong on the plot. Mind you, they've probably been taking instruction from seagulls.

Pigeons eat chickweed and other tender seedlings. Not their fault that cannot tell weeds from crops.

I admire them as great survivors!

Is there a plague of them this year? I've noticed more than previously and a couple of veg-growing friends have also said they think there are more than normal.

Wish we could shoot them, that'd bring my food bills down, no need to buy meat!

I think you have hit on something when you suggest there might be a plague of them - we are certainly seeing loads more than usual this year, by a long chalk.  To a lesser extent it seems also to be a prosperous year for the ring-necked doves (would be wring neck if I had my way).  Sorely tempted to take direct action - woodpigeon breasts lightly simmered in a wee drop of Rioja with mushrooms and shallots.....   feeling hungry now.

Had a peacock round yesterday - only one of them but a really big presence!
