We had a rather disheartening discovery at the weekend, it seems we have clubroot!

Looked it up in some books and the prognosis isn't great. Some of our brassicas seem to have gotten quite well established, while some others have been yellowing badly.

Our plan is to be harsh and take out anything that looks infected in the hope we can save some of the others. Does anyone have other ideas/suggestions?

sure:

dig in some lime each year before you plant.
ensure that you clean your tools etc (dont allow people to wash their veg in the water troughs)
buy club root resistant varierys in future
rotate your crops

Get the young plants as big as possible in the nursery bed and sprinkle some lime into the hole when planting . You will still get a crop off affected plants , just not as good as clean plants.

I suffer badly from club root - well at least my brassicas do - and would go a step further than 8doubles to suggest that you grow your plants in individual 3" pots before planting out when they are a decent size.

This give the plant a good root ball to start with and the ability to grow through the club root.

And yes - a good handful of lime in each hole when planting.

As an aside, did you ever try that basamid? ... assuming it didn't work if you did

I'm holding that back for next year to try in a piece of ground I know is absolutely riddled with it, as the rotation will bring the brassicas around to that plot again.

Thanks for the pointers! Slightly more encouraging than the books, we'll definitely be taking some of this on board. It's our first year so will see what happens as we rotate next year.
