Help to identify some wild fruits.
« on: July 31, 2009, 07:25 »
I got up early and went for a walk about, came across quite a few wild fruit bearing trees, so can anyone help me identify them.

Number 1, I think Cox's apple?

Number 2, No idea.

Number 3, orange berry, green steam growing low.

Number 4, I think and hope this is a plum tree?

How large are the apples & "plums"?

No. 2 is hawthorn, no. 4 could be sloe, depending on size. Thinking about 3 - seen it before somewhere!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I have a recipe I was looking at yesterday for cloudberries

I was thinking how cool that would sound on a jar of jam

Cloudberry jam or is that just me with my head in the clouds again

The apples were about the size of a golf ball and the plums half the size of a golf ball.

The hawthorn berries are they edible.

Cancel the cloudberry.

Now we've got a different angle & idea of scale - that's Cuckoo Pint!

That's what I revised it to!

BQ - and anyone else.

If you've got a very long URL, please don't post it.

It's made everything go off screen including the moderator contol buttons, so I can't get in to modify posts.

We've got to wait until Aunt Sally is around.

The apple is almost certainly a wildling which has grown from a core that someone threw into the edge many years ago.  It is most unlikely to be a Cox which is difficult to grow even  under orchard conditions.

Cheers,

Gillie
