cabbage whites - beware
« on: July 19, 2009, 21:09 »
Well I've done it at last.  After months of delibaration I've finally ordered 3m x 50m of green debris netting off scaffold direct to replace my patched up badly fitted pond netting.  I was just wondering what people here recommend as the most effective support.  I have a mishmash of blue piping and bamboo cane with hosepipe corners, none of which is tall enough to properly cover my ever growing sprouts, black kale and purple sprouting.  As my blue piping never seems to stand up properly and always bends over, I would welcome any expert advice.

Put some stakes in the ground and put the water pipe over them or support with a wooden frame.  A few pics would help.
Cheese makes everything better.

I agree with Ice, insert a cane in both ends of the pipe and shove in the ground. The longer the cane, the bigger the tunnel.

I did use canes inside the pipes but I guess they were too short which is why the pipes flopped.

Could be that or it could be how big a span you are trying to cover.  Post a picture when you can.

I think you need the cane across the top to hold it all in place, like Ice used making her netting frame.

Cue........Ices frame...Da da

O go on Ice ..post it up, i can't be bothered to look for it tonight, pretty please

Thank you Ice..  Need several of those on my plot!   I HATE those white fluttery things, they have destroyed my early brussels... tho I did manage to cover my cabbages this year!   I NEED a walk in anti 'cabbage white' area...  One day I will save enough for a polly tunnel and I will sit in it and laugh at those white fluttery things while they try to find a way in ::)

Thanks for the pic.  The central support is definitely the missing ingredient.  My 2 beds are 1.2m by 5m which have 6 pipe hoops in each.  They are currently too low and the netting sags so the whole thing needs raising and supporting.   I will try and post a pic if it eventually stops raining.

It's a good system but if any part of the net touches the brassicas cabbage whites stick their bums through the net and lay their eggs.
