Mini iceberg lettuce, a recommendation
« on: July 16, 2009, 11:19 »
Grew these at the same time as my cos and little gem.  Two weeks after the cos and little gem bolted they are still sitting there happily and healthily.

Thought I had made a mistake planting them but they taste great and have a lovely crisp texture.  Will be growing them again next year. :)

I know, it's sad to get excited about lettuce. ::)

I grew those as well this year ICE and they will defo be on my every year list, theywere nce and crisp and you get quite a lot out of one considering they are only s'posed to be grown to tennis ball size, and my man is a big eater.

Ideal for my raised beds.  I take the whole leaves and fill them with cous cous or a little greek salad and eat them as finger food.  Perfik. :)

Are the Iceberg the ones at the bottom right of the pic?  I have never grown iceberg as I have always associated them with the awful tasteless, crunchy, watery stuff they serve in the name of salad in the USA.   However, I am prepared to be converted if you say they are not like this.

I'm not sure the ones in the photo are Iceberg - probably not.

I bought one packet of "Mixed Lettuce" (Kings Seeds 99p – cheaper still from my supplier “Chris & George”) and bunged them in.
I think the redder ones were most likely "Lollo Rossa" or something similar. These can be sown into August - apparently.

The red may have been Cos Lettuce - (Tasty Red Cos type)..

Suttons "Speedy Seeds" - (ready in 3 weeks) do a ‘cut and grow again’ Leaf Salad - mixed. These too can be sown up to and in August.

I tend just to keep sowing into pots or individual cells planting some more out as I harvest to keep a succession growing.  ;)
