Hi all,

My garlic stems went brown and fell over, i seem to remember that this is a sign that it needs to be pulled - so i have. What do i do with it now so that i can eat it over the next couple of months??

Thanks for the advice.
If you do things well, do them better. Be daring, be first, be different, be just.

Use up any bits that may have any rust on then lay out all the bulbs somehwere airy laying on elevated chicken wire is good, once all dry plait up and hang somewhere where it isnt in the way and getting knocked.  Same as onions really.

I string my bulbs together, about 3-4, and then hang them in the shed. this way they keep for ages, i will still be using them next year ;)

When you say string them together do you mean just tie them in small bunches with all of the stalk left on?

People generally plait them once they've dried enough using the tops to tie them in.

i normally wait for a couple of months until the stalks have dried out completely then cut the them off and store in net bags checking them regularly for any signs of rot. this way works for me ;)

I am really pleased you asked this question, I was just going to ask, but thought I had better look back abit.    Mine have gone 60 percent brown, and the scape, I left on has now uncurled.  They have all flopped over as well,  so shall I pull them now ?  But I still don't understand how to plait them, do you plait in groups of 3 then.  thanks , Mrs Bouquet

I'd lift them - theres still time (just) to reuse the space too   :D

I don't think its easy to plait hardneck garlic (I am open to being corrected on this). softneck stuff you can do with the leaves but hardneck needs string. I did google it a while back but I seem to have lost the link.

I lift my garlic and leave it to dry for a couple of weeks in the greenhouse on the slated shelves, then I whizz it through the blender to chop it up and then cram it in old coffee jars and pour over white wine vinegar (as in lazy garlic).  I am not growing garlic next year as I haven't even started last years four jars yet let alone what I am going to get from this year's planting.  (Keep your elephant garlic seperate from your normal as it has a different taste).

Pulled mine up last weekend.  It is all drying in the front porch.  The smell is divine, although my wife and mother-in-law disagree.

We have dug ours up now, and they are about the size of my fist !!!, they are on the slats in the greenhouse, and are called 'cristo'.  how do I know if they are hard of soft necked. ?   Thanks for the site address, I shall study that, and yes they smell absolutely fab.  Thanks all Mrs Bouquet

I pulled some of mine up and split the bulb right away and put bags of cloves into the freezer.  They are lovely for roasting or for soups and you can just open the freezer bags and take out as many as you like.
