Hows your rhubarb

My friend gave me some from a little nursery she worked for that was closing down.  That was in the August 2005.  Last year it got a bit bigger, but not as big as yoursRuffy and this year looks really good.  I covered the whole thing in compost last autumn, and its all rotted away now.  I've also dug bits up and given them away to family and friends, so I'm quite pleased.

We also have it growing down the bank of the land drain at the back of the house, but its not easy to get at and is always very green, so its growing wild now, but the one we got from the nursery is lovely dark red almost all the way up the stem.

seeing as mine is looking very sad from being moved should I cut it back to the ground to help it grow, or just leave it?

What about giving it some nice comfrey tea????  You could cut off what is there, and let it concentrate on developing some more nice healthy roots, but they say rhubarb is hard to kill, but I did manage it once in our last house, so you're not alone purplebat!!!!!!

I had the most enormous early rhubarb which was fully formed last week, and have another patch which is still developing, so I decided to make some rhubarb wine, as someone had given me some demijohns.  And it is happily formenting as we speak.

Can't wait to try it, Ive never made wine before!!!

Bottoms up everyone!!!

Moved mine to a nicer place end of last year and it`s gone berserk!Have just given my small person her first bit of stewed rhubarb and custard(no point getting sophisticated at this stage),if speed and quantity are anything to go by I will need another plant!
Bless her she`ll try anything.Long may it last.  :)

How much rhubarb is in your wine recipe RW?  Mine says 15lbs, but that seems a heck of a waste of rhubarb!!!  Its years since I made rhubarb wine, but I remember it was very nice and came out as a rosé.

I had 10lbs and adjusted sugar accordingly, it has made a gallon and a half. :D

Inherited 7 established plants. 1 is doing especially well. Had crumble tonight. Have already had to remove a particularly vigorous flower spike.

We had a picking of rhubarb this week, hope the rest will grow more after the rain, we've been promised this week.

I split a couple of clumps and this is the second year, so we should have a good crop,we freeze it for puddings .

Yep it sure is ! Well as I've said before we are growing food for about 16-20 folks here, so everything is done on a larger scale to most.

We make a delicious Rhubarb Chutney too ! and Rhubarb and Ginger Jam!
