Should I cut side shoots off my raspberry canes?
« on: July 11, 2009, 10:57 »
My raspberrys have done amazing things this year. Next years canes are very thick and nearly 8ft tall. Some of them have 'side shoots' that are now 6ft long. I can't see these supporting a crop without breaking, so should I cut them off (my inclination) or stake them?

Opinions sought.

Regards,

SS

I presume they are a spring fruiting variety so thin them out a bit and just retain the strongest 10 or so canes from each plant.  I would leave those as the are for now but in February cut them down to a few inches above the top wire. The side shoots sould not be a problem.
