Spring sown garlic
« on: July 10, 2009, 21:22 »
Put some garlic in in the spring, wondering if about now is the time to harest?

Did a test and pulled one tonight - it is one large bulb - is this the norm for spring sown, or should i leave them a little longer, if so will they develop cloves??

I planted some in early Feb and have just harvested them as they have finished growing and the leaves are dying off. Most of them are a good size and have divided well. So they had 6 mths in the ground. Maybe yours need a bit longer? I read on forum yesterday someone recommended planting on the shortest day and pulling on the longest day.
The less time you have, the more becomes available.

Not sure if im correct here but dont u need a frost to split the garlic into cloves easier? but i could be wrong.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

Yes, I believe that frost does help the clove to split.  I had a recent thread on growing the stuff and the consensus seemed to be that they are greedy feeders and lots of rotted manure will help.
Cheese makes everything better.

Thanks Hilary G. and everyone else
Mine were specifically Spring growing garlic.  Will leave longer and hope they split off into cloves.

Wait until the foliage turns yellow and starts to fall over - thats when the bulbs should be about right for pulling
