advice re chicken mites
« on: July 05, 2009, 12:07 »
Hi my chickens have mites. Our broody who has 10 chickens also has mites.
All the chickens and the chicken runs had been treated before the chicks hatched. However the mites are still arund....does anyone know is it sate to treat the chicks with the powder chicken mites?
Also chicken mites on humans.....best way to get rid of them.....can they invade your home?
Any advice would be useful. what would kill the mites once and for all  ?????

Hi Abd

Is it Red mite or lice?
Red mite live in nooks and crannies in the coop and feed of the hens at night where as lice live on the chickens :)
Loads of info on here:

pop vaseline on the ends of the perches, when they come out and crawl towards the chickens some will get stuck and you will see some in the morning :)

If you remove the perches, you might see lots of red, then you know they are there.
Also you might find them in the bottom corners when you clean out the pens, use a scraper to get ever last bit of muck out (and if you see any of them squash them  >:( )
When I have had problems I spray during the day in all of the gaps that are in the pens, removing any perches that can me removed spraying those also.
The problem with trying to get rid of them on a night time is that they are feeding on your chickens so you can't get those unless you treat all of your chickens.
Make sure you do the whole process again a week later to kill any of those you have missed and any eggs that may have hatched.

cheers  guys . i have never seen anything when i am clearing out the house an i sweep up really well in all the corners , i will try the vaseline tonight but as for moving my perches that mite be a bit tricky as they are screwed into  the side of the shed  it was fun enough putting them up once let alone doing it twice .although i was thinking about making them slightly lower over the coming weekend as well as paint the house etc so i mite as well do it all in one go .
