I just bought a tomato grow bag as was the only compost I could get hold of - but I want to get veg started (Kale + cabbage in particular) in this compost (as well as sprouting seed to eat). Should tomato compost really only be used for tomatos - if it replaces a regular compost might it get other veg seeds off to a bad start, or is it nothing to fuss about.. obv I want the best for me lil' babies, as I want them to grow big and strong, so they can fill my belly and nouish my soul

I think growbags often have some nutrients added to keep the tomatoes going for a bit longer without needing feeding.

Seeds don't need nutrients to start with, but if that's the only compost you've got I would give it a try

as Yorkie said, can you get a bag of general purpose compost?   

Tomato compost will have too many nutrients which will make your seeds too leggy so you should try to find seed compost, or failing that just general purpose compost but don't let it dry out but at the same time, don't let your compost become boggy and overwatered.

I use grow bag compost for all my seeds as it's cheaper!

Never had a problem.

thanks for all your advice.. I wont be so poor next year so can splash out on other composts  :happy:
