Baby Ducklings Hot Weather Advice
« on: July 01, 2009, 20:12 »
Hi,
I have two 10 day old welsh harlequin in ut not my garage at present.
Our garage has no windows and is much cooler that the outside (temperature unknown)
I currently still have the heat lamp on all day (low setting) will this be too hot for them?
They are not sat under the lamp but do not avoid it

Sounds like they are happy then. If they are huddled togeter under the lamp they are too cold and panting in the corners then likely to be too hot. Just pottering about, eating and drinking then you have got it right. I found this a better guide than a thermometer. This time of year in tis weather they won't need heat for much longer.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Would be good if you could pop a thermometer in with them darrena, the weather as it is at the moment you might be using the heat lamp during the day and not needing too :) The more heat they have the slower the new feather growth will be :)

By the time they're 2 weeks old they should be under 25/26 deg C

Take a day time temp reading and see what it is :D

When do you take them off them off chick crumbs? Hopefully never as I have enough to last me about 6 months.
I assume its layer pellets next

Move onto growers next.
I move them on between 2 and 6 weeks (depending entirely on how much chick crumb I've got left!). Growers is better tan layers which apparently has too much calcium for growing chicks/ducklings for healthy development of bones and joints. That being said I have had ducklings eating layers far too young and never had a problem. It should be started about 20 weeks for ducks.
