I'm so happy!!!
« on: July 01, 2009, 18:20 »
Hi,
I thougt I'd sare my happiness as I just harvested my first courgette which is going to go very well with the pork steak & chips planned for dinner tonight. I've attached a picture for all to see. The newly born mesure a good 20cm(8inches) & is well.

Everything else is getting on strong as the dwarf french beans are starting to produce as well as the broad beans & peas. I'll try to take a picture of mi plot next time I go there if anyone is interested.

Yes, have an allotment in Walnut Tree if you know it.  Been there just about a year and absolutely love it!

Potential alternative uses for a glut of courgettes:

1.  stuff a ballpoint refill into one end for use as an organic-ish pen.

2.  cut the ends off when they are about 4 inches long, hollow out using apple corer and slide 'em over your fingers for *amusing* joke monster hands at BBQs

3.  freeze 'em then use them as non-diluting drink coolers in lieu of ice cubes

4.  use  them as stoppers to re-cork bottles of partly used wine (as if).

5.  cube them and mix with the gravel to give an interesting new look to your paths

6.  paint them orange and pretend they are special carrots grown especially bland for people who dont like the taste of carrots.

7.  hang them on strings instead of corks from the brim of a teetotal Australian's bush hat.

8.  stick them in your ears to drown out the awful grunting when Wimbledon 'ladies' (ha!) are playing.

9.  let them grow big to marrow size then hollow them out with a candel inside and a scary face cut into them as a sort of long-faced alternative to a pumpkin lantern.

10.  slice them, fry them lightly in oil with onion, garlick,  halved small tatties, a little bit of chopped chili, smidgin of root ginger and dabs of garam masalam.  Couple minutes then sling in a drained tin of chickpeas and a half pint of chopped (boil-peeled) toms and half pint or so of water.  Simmer about 20 mins then bung in 8oz of spinach leaves, spinach beet leaves, evne spare (outer) lettuce leaves, stirring all the time until they are well wilted in.   Bit of salt and pepper, a warm naan bread and a cupful of raita and share in the garden of your choice along with a bottle of something refreshing....

11.  stick cardboard ears on 'em, paint little faces with tippex then pretend to have discovered a new species in order to delay the new bypass.

12.  drop them into a stream and race them under a bridge.  This game is called 'pooh courgettes'.
The Dales - probably fingerprint marks where God's hand touched the world
