Poor broadbean yield.
« on: July 01, 2009, 16:12 »
I've seen a few mentions of this in other threads too.

Have a quick look over my bunyards yesterday as there really is a very poor yield per plant compared to other years / varieties.  I grow different ones each year and Im not sure if this is a variety issue or if its been a poor year.

I'm looking at 3-4 pods per plant - the plants being 5ft high.  I've have sown a few in succession and the later ones are just as bad. Its a little early for the Suttons but they look to be just as bad.

Anyone else with poor yield this year. ? Any suggestions as to why and how to avoid it next, I doubt there will even be enough to freeze from ~ 80 plants.

I'm growing Bunyards Exhibition too (in raised beds) as usual because my OH won't have anything else. So far, because I've been watering them nearly every night (my OH again), I seem to have pods setting much lower down than before. They seem to be fattening up but haven't harvested any yet so don't know the pod count. Looks as if it will be as before and most of them filled. Perhaps the early dry spell caused a problem??? ???
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

My Bunyards are doing fine, in fact better than last year.
I usually grow them and have never had a problem.
We had some horse manure this year and it has improved all my crops a lot. Also the rain has helped.
Sorry I have no help on your problem.

Hi, it's been a very dry year so far and watering can be a problem, i grew Express and kept them watered and they were fine. A bonus was i picked a lot of pods the other day popped 4 pounds of the pods into some boiling water and made a gallon of bean pod wine.
