Phoned vets this morning they have baytril oral 2.5% and i already have a couple of 1ml syringes in my pet medical box.

Going to pick it up at 10.30 - 11am, just wanted to ask how much do i give each chicken and is it just once a day for the 7 days?

I'd rather be armed with all the info before i go and collect from him as he is a vet who is not used to chickens only the usual domestic pets and there was talk yesterday of £75

Many thanks

Hi becksi a consultation and antibiotics should be around £20 - £30.
The dose of baytril is dependant on weight, for a standard size hybrid should be around 0.7ml twice a day :)

Thank you Foxy.

Mine are a variety of ages, breeds and sizes, if i go by the largest bird some will be getting a little more than they should, will this harm them?

Also it was ok to use the flubenvet at the sametime wasnt it?

Thanks.

As long as you dose twice a day and finish the course they will be fine. Personally I would hold on the flub until after the a/bs but thats just what I would do.
Egg withdrawal, 2 weeks for personal use and the vet should recommend 4 weeks. :)

Nothing is ever simple for me, just about to leave for the vets and they phone, receptionist made a mistake they only have 10% Baytril and as the average weight of one of my chickens is 800g its such a small amount each he said to put it in their water, i said i'd rather give it to each one separatly so i know they are getting the correct amount.

So i cant go collect it till 11.30am as he has got to recalculate the amount each one needs.

I told him that a chicken farmer i know has informed me that they have used Baytril 2.5% before and used 0.7ml each on their standard size hybrid, he reckons that sounds alot for each chicken.

Maybe he is not the ideal vet for me to be using as whatever i seem to say or suggest he says NO.

I'm in Dartford, Kent can anyone please point me in the right direction of a vet that is used to dealing with chooks?

Thanks.

hi becksi, sorry to hear you're having a bad time with your poorly chook, we're the other side of the water in Grays and i recently took one of our chickens to a vets called Wylie's in Upminster, which came highly recommended from another vets and he was a really nice guy, don't know if that would be too far for you tho.

dont worry, the dose for oral 2.5% (avian) is 0.4ml per kg so if your girl is only 800gms then she would need less than an average hybrid of around 0.6ml (1.2kgs) :) saying that IMO, I always give a little more due to loss when giving Baytril, so never ends up being an accurate measure given! ??? (as well as wearing the stuff on occasion!)
what you could do is phone a few local vets and ask if they have the baytril in stock?
I am popping in to see a poultry specialist later so I can double check for you. :)

I'm so glad i found this forum as i would be blad with stress and crying otherwise.

Being new to chickens there is so much to learn, with all the reading and talking to others i have done there are still times you need to speak to someone for advice or to settle your mind.

Thanks so much for your help and fast replies.

I have got the 10% Baytril now and i am giving them 0.1ml each twice a day, came to a total of £26.50 which is ok.

I kept her separate from the others alday yesterday and last night she stayed in the kitchen in the dog crate OH made a perch for her and we covered crate with a blanket so it was dark and peaceful for her, the last questions i have is:-

Should i keep her separate from the others still, now that the baytril is being given, until the course is finished?

& should i wait till the baytril is finished before cleaning out the coop with jeyes or do it now?

Thanks again for your time.

I'm happy to say that she is much better already  :)  i put her back in with the others yesterday evening just before bedtime and this morning when i let them out she was drinking and eating with all the others, alert & mixing with them like she use to.

She also came running when i threw some spring greens in with them and this evening she join in with the others tucking into the mixed corn i threw in.

What a fast change around, i'm so happy  :)

I have been giving them their Baytril on little squares of bread as thought it was less stressful than catching then and syringing it in their mouths, although i have had to do one at a time to make sure each time the one its for gets it, but its going well.

Scrubbed out the coop this morning with jeyes and this evening once they were in the coop i sprayed the run and free range area with jeyes too.

Thanks everyone.
