Right, so I pulled up some new potatoes for the very first time yesterday. Some of the potatoes were very big but some on the same halum were just babies. Does this mean I harvested too soon or too late? Or is this to be expected?

If the average size is what you wanted then its the right time, all spud plants will produce big and little tubers, its just their natural cycle. On my earlies I will lift one plant, look at the size and if it how I like them then I chop the tops of the others off to stop them growing and lift as and when I need them (be advised I have very sandy soil so not bothered by slugs that much).

Thank you very much for the swift response. I have one more question. Is the difference between early, middle and late season potatoes only the length of time they are lft in the ground or are they fundamentally different types? I think it is the latter, but am not 100% sure now after reading a few things.

They are fundamentally different types of potato.

The types as you mentioned them in that order have a progressively longer growing season. Thus they can be all planted at the same time, but you will be lifting your lates, (generally maincrop for storing), quite a lot later.

Thank you! Incidentally, I ate my very first potatoes yesterday. From the plot to my plate in under two hours. Didn't know they could taste like that. That's why we grow vegetables!
