No fruit on raspberry bushes.
« on: June 23, 2009, 10:10 »
Hello,

We planted, raspberries, blackcurrants, and gooseberries all together last year. We have blackcurrants, and goosegogs, but no raspberries!.

I have no idea what type of bush it is, (doh), but not knowing very much about this, and reading some other posts, I believe you can get an autumn raspberry, but does it fruit in the autumn, as there are no flowers or any signs of anything on the bushes.

Any advice appreciated.

Autumns fruit on the cane growth of this year so it doesn't sound like you have them. Summers grow fruit on the cane growth from last year. So it sounds like you have summer ones.  Don't cut them too far back in Autumn and you should get a crop next year.  Cut this canes that have fruited (none this year obviously lol) back to about 6 inches but leave the canes that have grown this year. (Except spindly weak ones).

Autumn plants get cut back harsh after cropping.

Any pics to help us identify the plants?  (They all look alike to me to be honest but someone might know  :D )

Did you prune at all last autumn? If you did you may have pruned off the canes that were supposed to fruit this year?
My autumn raspberries have thrown up long canes with flowers on, and are now setting fruit.

If you have long canes with no flowers, then i think you have summer fruiting raspberries and these new canes will fruit next year. Hope that nakes sense ::)

My Autumn raspberries are currently about 4 foot high and show no signs of flowers, but they fruited last year. so hopefully yours are the same :)

Well i suppose the answer is
If the canes don't fruit this year then they will fruit next...so summer ones. :D

If they do flower and fruit this year then they're autumn ones :D and you have to prune them to the ground in winter :)

Can we agree on this then folks??

We've already had quite a few raspberries from 2 of our pick'n'mix Aldi selection that we got early this year. They only got bunged in morrison's flower buckets too so I am quite pleased with the results so far.

I have no idea which one is which though!!

humm - thats a problem I've had with Morrisons, not sure what you're getting - bought two "Bramleys" from them several years ago - I've always had eating apples off the trees!

I have a book I use for soft fruit.  A bit dated now but its still valid.  (I use other well known books for most other allotment topics  (plug plug    )

But this one does me proud for soft fruit.

Hi,

Thanks so much for all of your replies. I will try and get some photies online too, once I work out how my phone does it. The garden seems to have gone mad this year, and I still have absolutely no idea what I am doing, or what most of the plants are.

I do think I have dug up weeds that are plants, and vice versa, Perhaps if I get some photies of the plants I don't know what they are, some kind person might be able to tell me.
I have looked in some of the books, but still get confused.

Don't think the rasps are going to do anything at all this year, looked at them again earlier, and just lots of leaves, and nothing else.  Oh well, next year then. At least we have some gooseberry crumble or fool to look forward to!

Have made some elderflower cordial tonight too, first time ever, hope it works out, but seemed a huge amount of sugar to put in. Yum yum.
