Yolk......No shell!
« on: June 17, 2009, 09:14 »
When i cleaned the coop out this morning there was a yolk in a bag, no shell :tongue2: it was in the perch area, i noticed that Treacle had yolk down her leg so assume it was her she didn't lay yesterday either. Treacle has been shaking her head, coughing and opening her beak for about a week now, the vet said it sounds like gapeworm so i have been treating them all with Flubenvet since Monday, they have oyster grit and i give them Orego stim in their water. I was wondering if the course of treatment causes this, or if it indicates that she has a different condition, maybe some respiratory problem ( the vet said it was a possibility) she is fine in every other way and eating well.....Any ideas? :(

The lack of shell indicates illness, which you already know about. Sounds more like a virus to me but I'm not a vet :)
Any swelling around the eyes or bubbles? Any discharge from the beak?
Just make sure she is getting rid of all the soft eggs otherwise it can lead to an infection in the vent.
The eggs should return to normal once she's better, try a little ACV in the water as it's supposed to help with calcium absorbtion.

ACV = Apple Cider Vinegar (not the stuff you get from the super market but the unrefined stuff from the feed Merchant.)

Oregostim can be given with other things like ACV.
If you have treated the illness and she is still laying them a little cod liver oil may help as the vit D aids calcium absorbtion and is essential for proper metabolism and maintainence of calcium levels.
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.
