My first 2 lottie mistakes....what to do?!
« on: April 12, 2007, 14:26 »
Ok....don't laugh, first I chitted me tatties, 2nd earlies and maincrop and forgot to label which were which....mmm, if I throw them in (well not quite throw but you know what I mean) will it be a big problem if they get mixed up?!

Second - I planted my broad beans but didn't read the planting instructions properly, got the double row bit but planted 60 cm apart (which clearly is the space between double rows, not the rows themselves!).  If I plant a row down the middle - so I'll end up with a triple row I guess....will this be ok?

Not the best of starts but hey ho!!
I'd like to think I knew what I was doing....but generally I don't!!!

If you have enough space, plant all of your tatties at maincrop spacings. My bet is that you could do a rough pre-sort based on size of chits. The 2nd earlies should have larger chits.

Broadbeans - yes, either a triple row

OR sow OUTSIDE both rows to give specified spacing between 2 double rows

OR sow adjacent to one row, giving you a single and a double.  You can transplant some lettuce in between so as not to waste the space.

Thanks WG...by chits do you mean sprouts/growth?  I'm a bit close to the other things I managed to put in the ground in the correct way to put rows adjacent but might do a single and a double as suggested with lettuce!  Hopefully I can't mess that up!

The skins and chits may well be different colours too.

Yes.  A chit is what is produced by the process of chitting.

My earlies produced loads of longish dark purpleish coloured chits and the main crop produced very little in the way of chits at all, the spuds were also slightly different colours, a deliberate and planned thing on my part so I could tell them apart should a child (or me) accidentally mix them up.

I made the same mistake with my spuds; won't one lot produce leaves or flowers before the others? cos I ain't digging 'em up to look at the colour of the chits
