Why hasn't my garlic 'cloved'
« on: June 14, 2009, 17:57 »
Hi all - a newbie here :)

I've had my plot for a year or so now and planted Taylors 'Garlic Marco' at the beginning of November last year.

It's grown, and although the foliage looks really 'wimpy' there are quite big bulbs underneath (i've had a furtle ;)) - so i pulled one up last week and although the bulb was the size of a golf ball - it was one solid bulb - no cloves??

Any ideas what has or hasn't happened or am i getting ahead of myself and need to wait until they are much bigger??

thanks in advance

Matt

Hi and welcome  :D

If the foliage hasn't yellowed and fallen over, the garlic isn't ready yet - I have a feeling it 'cloves' up towards the end.  So hold your horses, and wait till the plant tells you it's finished growing  ;)
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I pulled up one to use green today (couldn't be bothered to go shopping to buy a clove ::)) and they are just beginning to split into cloves. :) The bumps were clearly there under the first layers but were still very small.....................but nice to know that it's doing the right thing :D

I asked this question last week and was told that if they still resembled onions and hadn't cloved up by now then they wouldn't, and it was because they hadn't had a cold enough spell. they were planted in November too so definetley had enough cold!
Now I am wondering what to think! May be hope yet  :)

IMO they will be fine Sharonx :)
Last year i didn't plant till march and still they cloved up they were just a bit later!
Don't know about yours, but mine are still very green..no where near ready to harvest, so i wouldn't have expected the bulbs to look ready yet. Just thought i'd give some encouragement to those who were worrying about them :)
