Courgettes in containers
« on: June 09, 2009, 10:31 »
Hi

I'm new to the boards, but have been reading and learning from here for a while.

I'm on a waiting list for an allotment in Manchester, and am growing in containers in my garden and greenhouse until I can finally get a plot.

I have sown quite a lot of veg in modules and propagators and now I have some courgettes that are too tall for their propagator anymore.  They are about two inches tall and have two leaves on so far.  I have taken the lid off the propagator now so they're not getting squished.

My question is, is it too early to transplant these seedlings to bigger pots ?  Should i wait til there are more leaves ?

Any advce gladly appreciated
Kim

when you say 2 leaves are they the seed leaves? if there is just 2 leaves i am guessing that they are, the usual rule is to wait for 2 true leaves but courgettes grow quite quickly so that shouldn't be long, just remember to hold them buy the leaves not the stem

Hi thanks for you reply, the plant does just have seed leaves at the moment.

Should i wait for 2 proper leaves, or pot on now?  Also, should i put it in its final pot, a really big one, or a mid sized pot for it to grow into for now ?

You should really have taken them out of the propagator as soon as they germinated. They will now be a bit weak & spindly.

Pot them on into a larger, but not final pot & bury them deeper.

For the moment keep them somewhere warm, but not hot, with some foil behind them to reflect the light.

Keep fingers crossed, give them a week or so, then harden them off, grow them on a bit and pot on.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
