how do you control them, apart from keeping the coop clean is there a veterinary solution?

do you mean red mite? there are quite a few topics on here regarding them, have a grub about, i haven't had them yet so have no experience of them personally.

You could use milbenex.

It is potent stuff. It has a residual effect and will stay in the wood for some time. Or you could use paraffin.
