Anyone know how much lime I need to stick on my brassica bed?  It was manured in winter, but not dug in, so there's a layer of dry straw on the surface.  

Any idea how I go about liming it?  I'd like to leave the mulch in place and plant through it if that's practical...

Lime and manure don't go well together.  Weathered manure is better but I suggest you proceed as follows,

1. draw back mulch at planting spot (station)
2. dust generously with lime.  Old books will tell you to "whiten the ground".  I'd suggest a small handful at each station.
3. fork well in
4. stand on it to compact soil a bit
5. plant brassica

This will leave bare earth which is perfect if you use root collars to keep off cabbage root fly.
