missing asparagus
« on: June 01, 2009, 16:07 »
Out of 12 asparagus plants, only two survived last year's wet weather. Drownded they were.   Oh well, I can feel a bigger strawberry bed coming on  :D
Still glowing, still growing, still going strong!

Wait a while/

only 5 of my 10 plants have come up this year so far.. and only just (2nd year in ground) all were up last year so have no reason not to think the others will come up.. have half early and half later variety
Grandpa's lore: The only thing grown early is disappointment

Jeanieblue, if you decide to try asparagus again, and they are well worth the effort, mound the bed area up so they get better drainage. They really do hate sitting in water. If you see any more spears shoot up this season, build up the soil level a bit in that area so rain will run off and the roots should recover.

Some pictures I took in the walled vegetable garden (which was a good couple of acres!) at Helmingham Hall in the first week of June 2008.

They had four or five beds this size!

It was significantly earthed up, and a little ditch along the side too.  Hopefully clear from the pictures.

Some of mine are missing too.  This is their second year.  I had backlim, gijnlim and thelim.  The missing ones are all Thelim.  I think I will replace them with some more gijnlim if they haven't appeared by the autumn.

Thanks for the photo's Kristen - I've never seen a "proper" asparagus bed!
